Update Rollup 2 for Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials

Hi all,

In a continuing effort to improve the quality and functionality of its products Microsoft released its second update rollup for Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials.

With this update rollup Microsoft decided to include the Office365 integration module, which was previously available as an additional download only. As explained by the Microsoft SBS team: “The Office 365 Integration Module is an additional feature that is available for Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2011 Essentials. This add-in feature simplifies the management of Office 365 by integrating the administration experience into the server Dashboard, which is the command-and-control center for Windows SBS 2011 Essentials.”

No less than 14 major issues have been resolved with this update rollup, greatly improving the quality of this newbee in the Small Business world. Although Most of the solved issues can ben found on server side, Microsoft released an update rollup for the client side as well which is automatically and silently deployed once the server update has been installed.

More information about this update rollup can be found on the following pages:

Please note that this update only applies to Microsoft Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, this update cannot be applied to the Standard SKU.

Happy updating!

Samsung Omnia 7 and bluetooth carkit

Hi Everyone,

Sometimes the most difficult, annoying and most bugging issues come with the easiest fix ever. That same is true for using my Samsung Omnia 7 phone together with my build-in car kit from BMW. If you’re fed up with the cracking noice while making a call over bluetooth, or with the lost bluetooth connectivity at the moment you’re ready to pick up your call, grab your phone while you’re reading this and do exactly the following:

– Unlock your screen and go to SETTINGS
– Switch off your WIFI connectivity

Et voila, it’s as simple as that…

You cannot imagine how long that I’ve been struggeling with this issue. I searched the internet for many hours trying to look for a fix, bluetooth update or that one little thing that would fix my issue. Fortunately I’ve got a colleague with the same phone who came up with this idea.

browsing your crashed AD with dsamain.exe

I’m sure every one of us encoutered this problem once: a server crash with no working backup of Active Directory, thus, no way to recreate the users / security groups…

Luckily, Windows 2008 (RTM and R2) introduced a nifty little tool, that enables you to virtually load the crashed domain onto another server. That way you can peak into the previous configuration, and take over all necessary information.

All users/groups/… are stored in a single file: ntds.dit. First, we need to make sure that the integrity of the file is good. In many cases, this will not be the case, as a crashed server often will be shut down unexpected. Following commands can help you troubleshoot and solve this:

esentutl.exe /g “c:pathtontds.dit”
this command checks the integrity of the database file

esentutl.exe /p  “c:pathtontds.dit”
this command repairs any errors in the database file

When all this ends successfully, you can start with the mounting process.

dsamain.exe -dbpath “C:pathtontds.dit” -ldapport 5532 -allownonadminaccess -allowupgrade

-allownonadminaccess: needed to be able to access the database with another set of security credentials than defined in the virtually mounted domain
-allowupgrade: needed if you try to mount a ntds.dit file from an earlier version of windows (e.g. windows 2003)

If all goes well, the command will return the following message:

Now you can use your preferred Active Directory Management tool to connect to this mounted domain controller, using localhost for the host portion, and the defined ldap port as the port option.

If you want to connect to is using ADUC, you right click the root hive in this window, and choose for “Change Domain Controller”

Using the information in the above example, you fill in localhost:5532 and press OK. You will now be able to browse the mounted domain.
